Why is the God of the Old Testament and the God of the New Testament so different?

In the Old Testament, God is angry, violent and murderous. He turns people into salt, kills first born sons, strikes people down with lightning, locusts, plague, and kills all life on Earth save for a boat. The New Testament God is kind, understanding, giving, loving, caring, forgiving. Why is there such a difference? Is it the same God?

Because Jesus was a Buddhist. :)

It’s not God who was different, it was the covenant that was different.

the only thing I can say because i don’t know my self the other thing is that it is the same God and he is much more loving then he used to be

Yes I believe it is the same God.
Different people need to be treated differently

They don’t. There is only one God. Jesus came to be a sacrifice for sin the fist time. Jugdement is coming.

God is not angy and violent but he is the Judge of the universe.

Because Christians thieved the Old Testament from the Jews and flew solo for book two.

Jehova and Jesus are playing Good Cop/ Bad Cop.
Two faces of the same being Who is trying to manipulate you into doing His will.

Edit. You will notice that neither of the Gods is exactly straight with you.

There is only one God, But different versions his message, His message should be the same, but certain individuals ie: Paul changed it around.

    The NT is a lie.

God never said to turn the other cheek. He expected HIS PEOPLE to protect themselves and if they did not do it, he would do it for them.

Christians were the original “cut and runners.”
    Obama is a christian.

Because the 2 testaments were written by 2 very different groups of people with very different ideas about God.

There is a difference because he believes in justice. what you see as a harsh and terrible punishment, you are not attempting to look through God’s point of view. While impossible to fully comprehend, He does this because of the atrocities that have and will be committed by man. There is no way to know this but perhaps the Egyptians would have committed unspeakable crimes to the Jews had the Lord not intervened with Moses. Perhaps the sinners of the story of Noah’s ark were terrible, evil creatures with completely different moral standards that we have today. It is impossible to know His reasons for sure, God acts, judges, and loves us all. He has only the best interest for His creations in mind.

For one, the Old Testament happened over a much longer period of time. God had a lot more time to “turn people into salt, kill first born sons, strike people down with lightening, locusts, plaugue, and killing all life one earth. Another thing is that God doesn’t do a lot of “direct” things in the Bible, according to the writers. Jesus heals the sick and walks on water and stuff, but the LORD doesn’t really say stuff and do stuff much. Also, if you think about it, “Loving your enemy” is a heck of a lot harder then “An eye for an eye” and “a tooth for a tooth”. Just some food for the thought.
