Happykid asked: It seems like the Old Testament is included when it’s convenient and “not under the new law” anymore when it’s not.
So what’s the deal? Does the Old Testament matter to Christians or not? If not, why read it at all? Why reference it ever?

When did anyone say that the old testament didnt matter any more?
It is very important to Christians.
Homosexuality is condemned in the new testament as well.

Radical fundamentalists will use or say anything to try to oppress and subjugate *** people. They will twist God’s word around to suit their own political opinions and ignore Jesus’s own words.
Jesus said to love all people. He didn’t say love all heterosexual people, or all Christian people or all white people. Anybody who says anything else can’t call themselves Christians truthfully.

The New Testament reconfirms that homosexuality is a sin.
Homosexuality is a sin, and like all sins, it is forgiven COMPLETELY by the person believing the truth about Jesus.
The truth about Jesus is that the only way to be saved and to get into heaven and avoid being sent to eternal hell is by believing in faith alone that Jesus, who is God, died for our sins on the cross and rose from the dead (1 Corinthians 15:1-4). Believe this and you are saved!
Please pray now: “Jesus, please forgive me of my sins. I believe that You died on the cross for my sins and You rose from the dead. Thank You for eternal life!” You will be in heaven with Him forever when you die.

Because Christians cherry-pick the verses of the bible that suit their purposes.

They can legislate a self-serving iron age moral structure because their imaginary friend is bigger than yours.

The old testament does very much so matter to Christians. According to the new testament though, we do not judge so a true Christian should have no problem with *** marrage.

There is plenty of New Testament scripture against homsexuality as well.

Most of the *** haters are in the USA, it just takes us longer. After all, we were one of the very last countries to abandon slavery in the Western world and we are still bloody full steam ahead on excecuting humans. “Thou shalt not kill,” as written in the bible, does not have any “ifs”, “ands,” or “buts.”

It does matter. However, there are laws and regulations that, if studied out correctly (ie food laws, sacrifices etc.), you would find those laws fulfilled through Jesus Christ and His mission.
On the other hand, there are laws that are not yet fulfilled, like the ten commandments which are basic moral laws that all people, even atheists follow whether they attribute them to Christianity or not. Other laws confirm or build upon the ten commandments, and some of these include the legality (or lack thereof) of homosexuality. It was punishable by death, but that is no longer the case. It was illegal, is illegal, and will always be illegal in God’s eyes, no matter how many people give the thumbs down to my answer. You can’t even manipulate the Scripture to say otherwise. It is expressly forbidden.
Jesus did say to love all people, but that doesn’t mean we should love the sin they commit.
God loves all people, but He still has standards or we wouldn’t be discussing this. So how can one say that Jesus said to love all people to the ignorance of the sin they are committing?

Because they want to have an excuse for their bigotry. Duh.

Being *** is wrong according to the Bible and God but it doesn’t mean God don’t love you!! God loves all people that’s why he gives us the freedom of choice and how we choose to live although we are suppose to live for him!

I think it’s hypocritical. Christians sometimes use the Bible not as a guide but to back up their own ideas, their own preconceived notions and prejudices. They say the OT is obsolete but the will go back to it if they can’t find a passage in the NT to back up their idea.
You really see this in the fight over the Ten Commandments, their campaign to post it in classrooms, courthouses, legislative chambers, etc. The Ten Commandments are just the first 10 in a list of over 600 commandments, most of which they completely ignore. And of the 10 Commandments, only 3 have anything to do with actual law. And one of them, the prohibition of ‘graven images’, ask any Christian what that means and he’ll stare at you blankly and then change the subject.
Jesus taught the concept of the brotherhood of man, love your neighbor, love your enemy, love EVERYONE as you love yourself. But in our time (and country) the morals of Christians have been corrupted by politics. Intolerance is much easier to sell than universal love, and homophobia is a big part of this. Since there’s nothing in Jesus’ teachings against homosexuality, Christian leaders reach back to the Old Testament. But if you ask them ‘So why do you eat pork and shellfish? Why do you wear clothes of mixed fibers?’ they will say “Oh, well that’s simple! Those rules are obsolete because the New Testament replaced the Mosaic Law.”

That is a misconception; much of what Yeshua taught was the bulk of the old testament. The reason the old testament is included in the Christian bible, is because early Christians held to the tradition that it was part of the teaching curriculum. That is because Yeshua taught all that as well, in addition to having his own interpretation, you had to include it.
The animosity the temple priests had towards him was the fact that in Judaism, ultra strict ancient Judaism, only the priests could enter the temple and “talk to God.” Not only that but that only Jews were privy to, well, Judaism.
To put into perspective; imagine if the ancient Greek philosophers felt that Greek philosophy was only for them (the Greeks). Imagine, if modern Japanese felt the Playstation and Wii were ONLY for the Japanese. I could go on but this is an answers page so;
Yeshua was not out to convert people to Judaism, rather he was wanting to share, with gentiles, the ethics and wisdom of the wisdom works in Judaism, but see the temple priests were such an arrogant and nasty bunch, even that did not sit well with them. This is a sacredly held Christian tradition; he was not out to make more Jews, he was out to share the wisdom of Judaism.
See in the strictest, most ancient sense of the Jewish religion, that is forbidden. Its part of the reason Judaism has been branded as a barbaric primitive religion; the old testament says its okay to kill pagans, people who do not believe in Yaweh, and yet temple priests get mad at Yeshua for sharing Judaism.
How does that make sense?
How is it fair, to label someone, but then also make it so that it is impossible for them to improve their situation, the situation you label them for?
I guess its an old Jewish tradition it seems; labeling people but making it impossible for them to improve their situation.
In the old testament it says its okay to kill idol worshipers, but it also says, the wisdom of Yaweh is for Jews only. Okay, you could say the religion belongs only to them but would it have been possible to perhaps share the knowledge of Yaweh so they would stop being pagans and then perhaps there would not have been a need to kill them?
The old testament is largely ignored because of incidences such as those. Many people see the new testament as an “improvement” because of Yeshua’s doctrine emphasizing kindness and humility as being the true foundation of a moral life, not knowledge of rules. Labeling people, but making it impossible for them to EVER improve their situation, seems like a proud, and ancient Jewish tradition that levites in particular seem well fond of.
